**Gabriel Barros Reportedly Dies After Donating Kidney to Estranged Father**

Reports about the death of 22-year-old Gabriel Barros have sparked heartbreak and anger around the world.

Barros, from Pernambuco, Brazil, was allegedly forced to leave home at 16 after coming out as gay. He reportedly spent the following six years estranged from his father, relying on friends and shelters while rebuilding his life.

In early 2026, his father was diagnosed with advanced chronic kidney failure and urgently needed a transplant. Accounts attributed to relatives say other family members were unable to donate, prompting Barros to undergo compatibility testing.

Despite their painful history, he volunteered to donate one of his kidneys. An unnamed cousin said Barros “never held a grudge” and could not allow his father to die.

The operation reportedly took place in June at a public hospital in the interior of Pernambuco. The donated kidney began functioning in his father, but Barros allegedly suffered internal bleeding followed by sepsis. He died several days later.

His father reportedly missed the wake and burial because he remained physically weakened and under medical care following the transplant. He has not spoken publicly about his son’s death.

**Queer slang can sound like a private group chat escaped into public. One minute somebody is serving; the next, mother has eaten and the room is gagged. Nobody appears to be discussing dinner.**

Before the glossary, an important receipt: much of the language marketed online as 'Gen Z slang' or generic 'gay slang' grew from Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ ballroom communities and from African American English. Drag culture and shows such as RuPaul's Drag Race helped carry many terms into the mainstream, but they did not invent the culture.

Meanings also move. A word may carry a precise ballroom meaning, a broader queer meaning and a watered-down internet meaning at the same time. Use the language with context, give credit and never turn somebody else's culture into a comedy accent.

# Serving

To be serving is to present a look, mood or performance with complete conviction. You can serve face, serve glamour, serve executive realness or serve absolutely nothing. The object tells us what is being delivered.

Example: 'That silver suit is serving intergalactic divorce lawyer.'

# Mother

On the internet, 'mother' often means an iconic woman or performer with authority and devoted fans. In ballroom, a house mother has a deeper role: mentoring, protecting and leading members of a chosen house family, often well beyond the competition floor.

Calling every celebrity mother can be funny, but it should not erase the Black and trans women for whom the title describes real labour, care and leadership.

# Ate (and left no crumbs)

A person who 'ate' did something exceptionally well. If they left no crumbs, the performance was so complete that nothing remained for anybody else. It is praise, not a nutritional update.

Example: 'The verse, the choreography, the tiny sunglasses - she ate.'

# Slay

To slay is to succeed spectacularly, especially in performance, fashion or presence. It can be a verb, an instruction or a full review consisting of one word and several exclamation marks.

# Gagged

Gagged means shocked, overwhelmed or left speechless, usually because something is brilliant, dramatic or unexpected. If you are 'gagged beyond belief', the event has temporarily removed your ability to produce a normal sentence.

# Tea

Tea means information, truth or gossip. To spill the tea is to share it; to clock the tea is to notice what is really going on. 'No tea, no shade' traditionally signals that a blunt observation is coming without claimed malice, although shade may still be very much present.

# Shade

Shade is an indirect insult or a pointed observation that exposes a flaw without spelling out the whole attack. Ballroom icon Dorian Corey famously distinguished shade from a direct read: the implication does the work.

Example: 'I love that you are brave enough to wear that in daylight.' That is shade. The sun has been dragged into it as a witness.

# Read

To read someone is to identify and articulate their flaws directly, often with wit. A good read is specific. Random cruelty is not automatically culture just because somebody snapped afterwards.

# Clocked

To clock something is to notice it, identify it or call it out. The term can be playful, as in 'I clocked that little eye-roll.' Be careful when using it about trans people, because 'clocking' can also mean identifying somebody as trans and may carry real safety implications.

# Kiki

A kiki is an informal get-together for conversation, gossip and laughter. In ballroom, kiki scenes also developed as community spaces and competition circuits, particularly for younger participants. It is more than a cute word for brunch.

# Camp

Camp is an aesthetic that delights in theatricality, exaggeration, artifice and taste so intense it circles back to genius. Camp can be intentional or accidental. A perfect camp object is often sincere about being ridiculous.

# Trade

Historically, trade referred to a conventionally masculine man, often presumed straight or discreet, who had sex with queer men. Online use has broadened and sometimes just means an attractive masculine man. The older sexual and class context still matters.

# Chosen family

Chosen family is not really slang; it is a central queer idea. It describes the people we deliberately build family with, especially when relatives by blood are absent, unsafe or unable to understand us. Ballroom houses are one powerful expression of chosen kinship.

# Baby gay

A baby gay is somebody newly out or newly exploring queer life, regardless of their actual age. The affectionate version welcomes discovery. The patronising version treats a grown adult like a confused child. Context, as always, is mother.

# Queer

Queer is a reclaimed umbrella term for many people whose sexuality or gender sits outside straight, cisgender norms. It also has a history as a slur, and some LGBTQ+ people do not want it used for them. Use it for people and communities who use it for themselves; do not force the reclamation.

## Can straight people use LGBTQ+ slang?

Language travels, and nobody owns every syllable. The respectful approach is to understand the origin, avoid caricature, listen when people from the source community explain a boundary and give credit instead of declaring that TikTok invented ballroom.

## Does queer slang mean the same thing everywhere?

No. Meanings vary by generation, race, location, subculture and platform. If a term is being used in a ballroom space, its meaning may be more specific than the version you heard in a brand advert.

The series gives us gay, bi, lesbian, trans, non-binary and asexual characters without turning the cast into a glossary. Netflix has dated the finale film, Heartstopper Forever, for 17 July 2026, so now is the perfect time to catch up on all three seasons.

# 2. The Vampire Lestat

Interview with the Vampire has always known that immortality is more fun with yearning, betrayal and cheekbones sharp enough to open a letter. Its third chapter, retitled The Vampire Lestat, premiered on AMC and AMC+ on 7 June 2026.

Lestat takes centre stage as a rock star while the show's unapologetically queer relationships remain the blood pumping through the drama. Gothic, camp and emotionally unwell: mother has risen, and she has a microphone.

Come for the insults; stay for the complicated love between two ambitious women who keep remaking each other. Ava's bisexuality is part of her life, not a one-episode announcement followed by amnesia.

The Last of Us refuses to make queerness feel disposable in a prestige drama. Its most celebrated love stories show that even at the end of the world, LGBTQ+ people are still building homes, choosing each other and arguing about very normal relationship nonsense.

# 6. Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets gives us survival horror, cannibalism rumours and a sapphic love story that survives decades of trauma. Taissa and Van are not tidy representation. They are messy, magnetic and allowed to be as morally complicated as everybody else.

Watch this when Heartstopper has made you too emotionally stable and you need lesbians in the wilderness making choices no therapist could invoice enough to unpack.

This college comedy follows closeted freshman Benny as he tries to perform the version of masculinity he thinks everybody wants. Naturally, the plan goes beautifully wrong.

Overcompensating is fast, awkward and specific about the exhausting theatre of the closet. It understands that queer self-discovery can be painful and still absolutely ridiculous.

# 8. Abbott Elementary

Queer representation does not need a prestige budget or a tragic violin. Abbott Elementary gives gay teacher Jacob Hill friendships, romances, terrible timing and the same workplace chaos as the rest of the staff.

That normality matters. Jacob is not the school's diversity lesson; he is a full comedy character who happens to be gay and frequently needs somebody to take away his metaphorical microphone.

Sort Of stars Sabi Mehboob, a non-binary Pakistani Canadian millennial balancing family, work, love and several identities that other people keep trying to simplify.

Across three seasons, the show is gentle without being bland and political without turning Sabi into a speech. It is a beautifully observed comedy about transition in every sense of the word.

Blanca Evangelista remains one of television's greatest mothers. If you have somehow missed Pose, fix that little administrative error immediately.

# Stormé DeLarverie

**Most people have heard of Stonewall.**
**Far fewer have heard of Stormé DeLarverie.**

 Yet Stormé was one of the people who helped ignite the uprising that would change LGBTQ+ history forever.

Today, names like **Marsha P. Johnson** are rightly recognised around the world. Stormé’s name, however, is often missing from the conversation. But long before Stonewall, Stormé had already spent a lifetime refusing to accept the place society had chosen for her.

Born in New Orleans in 1920, Stormé entered **a world divided by race, gender and class.** Her father was white. Her mother was Black. In the segregated American South, that alone was enough to make life difficult.

Stormé later spoke about being **attacked and beaten** by white children because of her mixed-race background. She grew up learning that simply **existing could make you a target.** Those experiences helped shape the fierce, uncompromising person she would become.

As a young adult, Stormé found freedom in performance. She joined the legendary **Jewel Box Revue,** one of America’s most successful drag shows. The troupe toured the country under the slogan:

“25 Men and One Girl.”

**The “one girl” was Stormé.**

While the other performers were drag queens, Stormé often performed in tailored suits and masculine clothing, becoming one of the most **recognisable drag kings of her generation.** At a time when people could be arrested simply for wearing clothing that didn’t match society’s expectations, Stormé made a career out of **breaking those rules.**

By the time Stonewall happened in 1969, Stormé was already used to standing her ground.

# The Night Stonewall Fought Back

In the early hours of 28 June 1969, **police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City.**

Police began arresting patrons who didn’t comply with New York’s so-called “gender-appropriate clothing” rules. **Among those being arrested was Stormé DeLarverie.**

Witnesses later described her as **handcuffed, bleeding from the head and refusing to cooperate.**

As officers dragged her towards a police wagon, she reportedly turned to the growing crowd and shouted:

## “Why don’t you do something?”

Many people later pointed to **that moment as the spark that transformed a crowd of spectators into participants.**

**A routine police raid became a confrontation.**

**A confrontation became an uprising.**

**And the uprising became Stonewall.**

# The First Punch

More than fifty years later, one question still sparks debate: **Who threw the first punch at Stonewall?**

Many accounts credit Stormé DeLarverie. Stormé herself also maintained that she was the person who threw it.

Historians continue to debate the exact sequence of events from that night, and different witnesses remember different details. **But what isn’t disputed is that Stormé fought back.**

**Her resistance became part of the story that helped launch the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.**

# The Village Guardian

Stonewall was only one chapter of Stormé’s life.

For decades afterwards, she became a **protector of New York’s queer community.** She regularly walked the streets of Greenwich Village, keeping an eye out for people facing harassment, violence or discrimination.

Stormé was known for **carrying a concealed weapon** and wasn’t afraid to step in when someone needed help.

Over time, her reputation became legendary.

Locals gave her a nickname:

## “The Village Guardian.”

Many people later said Stormé was exactly the person you wanted nearby when trouble started.

# A Legacy Worth Remembering

Marsha P. Johnson became one of Stonewall’s **most celebrated figures.**

Stormé DeLarverie became one of its **most forgotten.**

# The World’s First Sanctuary

Hirschfeld believed in "Justice through Knowledge." He spent his life proving that being queer or trans wasn't a disease or a sin **- it was a natural part of human biology.**

The Institute provided the first modern gender-affirming surgeries. It even issued **"Transvestite Passes"** to protect trans people from being arrested by the police for simply existing as themselves.

It was home to a library of over 20,000 volumes. It held the **world’s only records** of early trans lives, medical breakthroughs, and queer history.

# The Targeted Attack

When the Nazis rose to power, they didn't just hate Hirschfeld **because he was gay.** They hated him because **he was Jewish** and because his science proved their "master race" theories were **wrong.**

**On May 6, 1933, the nightmare began.**

A mob of Nazi-aligned students and Stormtroopers (the SA) stormed the Institute.

They didn't just break windows; they systematically **stripped the building of its soul.**

**Dora Richter, the first person to receive** a complete male-to-female surgical transition at the Institute, was working there at the time.

She is believed to have **been killed during the attack or shortly after** - a human face to the immense loss of that day.

# The Public Inferno

For four days, the Nazis sorted through the archives. They weren't looking for "filth" - **they were looking for evidence.**

On May 10, they hauled trucks full of books and patient files to the Bebelplatz, a massive public square in the **heart of Berlin.**

In front of a cheering crowd of **40,000 people,** they lit a bonfire. They threw **14 years** of pioneering research, rare photographs, and patient records into the flames.

They even threw a bronze bust of Hirschfeld into the fire as a symbolic **execution of his work.**

The Nazis didn't burn everything immediately. They seized the Institute’s patient files.

These records contained the **names and addresses of every person who had sought help or care at the clinic.**

Being visibly queer can put your life at risk — full stop.

That’s exactly why people are calling this out. A match branded as “Pride” — supposedly about visibility and safety — now centres a team from a country where queer people have none. It’s not symbolic tension; it’s a real-world contradiction between the message on the pitch and the laws the team represents.

Even queer Iranians outside the country flagged concerns. Iranian authorities monitor social media, and people have been questioned or interrogated over posts made abroad. So appearing in Pride-related photos supporting the match could still create problems for family members back home. That’s how deep the risks go.

FIFA keeps promoting this as part of its “Football Unites the World” inclusion programme, but hasn’t explained why Iran was chosen or what protections — if any — exist for LGBTQ+ fans. FIFA assigns 2026 Pride game to Iran  🇮🇷

The Transgender Pride Flag was first designed in 1999 by Monica Helms - a trans woman, former U.S. Navy veteran, and activist. 

She created it after a conversation with the creator of the bisexual-pride flag, who pointed out the trans community needed its own symbol.

The flag made its first public debut at a Pride parade in Phoenix in 2000, marking the first time a visible, unified symbol represented trans identity in that way. 

In August 2014, Helms donated the very first transgender flag she ever made to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History - making it a piece of documented queer history preserved for generations to come.

the idea of finding rightness in your gender.

A U.S. District Court judge has blocked the president’s ban on transgender military service, calling it unconstitutional and discriminatory. Judge Ana Reyes ruled the policy violates the Fifth Amendment, unfairly targets trans people, and uses derogatory language.

Reyes, an openly lesbian judge appointed by Biden, highlighted a pattern—leaders have used military readiness as an excuse to exclude marginalized groups, from Black people and women to LGBTQ+ individuals. Now, trans people are the target, she wrote in her 79-page ruling.

The ban was rushed. Seven days after taking office, the president announced it. Thirty days later, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth implemented it—without consulting military leaders or providing data. The policy even claimed trans service members lack honor and discipline, claims government lawyers later admitted were "pure conjecture."

Trans people have served openly since 2021. Under questioning, federal attorneys conceded trans soldiers meet military standards and serve honorably. Reyes said the ban has caused "irreparable harm" and argued trans people deserve legal protection.

“The cruel irony,” Reyes wrote, “is that thousands of transgender service members have risked their lives to protect the very equal rights this ban seeks to take away.”

The lawsuit was brought by six active-duty members and two individuals seeking to enlist. Collectively, they have over 130 years of service and 80 commendations. Defense attorneys didn’t even argue they were unfit to serve.

Reyes slammed the ban as "rushed and haphazard," causing chaos and undermining military cohesion. It contradicts established policy and unfairly singles out those with gender dysphoria while allowing others with treatable conditions to serve.

The Defense Department’s justification? Reyes called it “inexplicably misleading.” The studies they cited didn’t assess trans service members already deemed fit. One study even found trans distress comes from discrimination—not being trans. Gender-affirming care, it said, improves well-being.

Reyes debunked cost concerns. The military spent $41 million on Viagra in 2023—compared to just $5.2 million on gender-affirming care, only 0.00057% of the 2024 budget. Past policies like "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" cost taxpayers over $600 million by discharging LGBTQ+ troops.


She mocked the administration’s priorities: “The president’s ban on paper straws contained more reasoning and scientific backing than this military ban.”

Reyes acknowledged legal appeals are likely but said her ruling preserves the current policy allowing trans people to serve without disrupting operations.

“The Court’s opinion is long, but its premise is simple,” she wrote. “All people are created equal. All means all. Nothing more. And certainly nothing less.”

Plaintiff Army Reserves 2nd Lt. Nicolas Talbott reacted with relief. “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do. This is my dream job. I was terrified I was about to lose it.”

Jennifer Levi of GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders called the ruling a victory for service members defending the nation. “The Court’s findings lay bare how this ban targets and undermines courageous troops. We are confident this ruling will stand strong on appeal.”

Two other legal challenges against the ban remain active in other courts.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Musk, who’s already facing backlash for a controversial gesture he made at Trump’s inauguration event. Many say it looked like a fascist salute, but Musk hit back on X, calling the accusations “tired” and “dirty tricks.”

The group told The Hollywood Reporter that Musk’s Trump inauguration stunt was the final push they needed. “OK, Elon, if you’re going to show the world who you are, let’s show the world who Tesla really is,” a spokesperson said, urging people to hit him where it hurts—his business.

Their campaign isn’t just posters. “Swasticar” stickers have been popping up on Teslas, and they’ve gone after Musk’s X platform too. One striking poster reads: “Delete your account. If the bar lets Nazis in, it’s a Nazi bar.”

The memo also states that any service member diagnosed with or showing symptoms of gender dysphoria will be processed for separation from military service.

Under Trump’s new memo, trans service members can apply for a waiver to stay in the military, but only if they prove a "compelling government interest" and meet strict criteria, including 36 months of "stability" in their sex without any significant distress.  

The memo mirrors Trump’s previous insults towards trans service members, claiming that gender dysphoria conflicts with military standards like readiness, cohesion, and integrity.  

Judge Ana Reyes, reviewing legal challenges against the ban, condemned the language in Trump’s executive order, calling it “unadulterated animus” against trans individuals.

Trans military advocacy group **SPARTA Pride** pushed back, stating that thousands of qualified trans soldiers are already serving and will continue to defend the country regardless of the ban.  

Two lawsuits have been filed challenging the ban, citing discrimination based on sex and violations of free speech, as military recruiters have been instructed to stop accepting trans recruits.  

A 2016 RAND Corporation study showed that trans-related medical costs are negligible compared to the overall Department of Defense healthcare budget, and foreign militaries have successfully integrated trans soldiers without harming military readiness.

# The Vivienne Wins Icon Award—Her Dad’s Emotional Speech Steals the Show

At last night’s (26 February) Metro Pride Awards in central London, The Vivienne – real name James Lee Williams – was posthumously honored with the **Icon Award**. Her father, Lee, and sister took the stage to accept the accolade, delivering a heartfelt tribute that left the audience moved.

The Vivienne, who shot to international fame after winning the first-ever season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, was found dead at home in Chorlton-by-Backford on 5 January. She was 32.

Chester Police confirmed there were “no suspicious circumstances” surrounding her passing. However, an inquest earlier this month revealed she died of an “unnatural cause,” with further investigation ongoing.

Choreographed by Cheryl, the queens strutted through the venue, jumping onto chairs as the audience erupted in cheers, with images of The Vivienne illuminating the screens.

Later in the night, The Vivienne’s publicist Simone Jones, who first announced her passing in January, received the LGBT+ Trailblazer Award. After being presented the accolade by Girls Aloud stars Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, he dedicated it to his late client and dear friend.

“Viv was the absolute definition of a trailblazer, and her light will shine on us forever,” he shared.

On Trump’s inauguration day, his team wiped the Spanish-language version of the White House website, stripped accessibility features, and—brace yourselves—completely erased LGBTQ+ and HIV-related info from federal pages.

Lexi didn’t hold back, taking to Instagram to vent her frustration and share her truth. “This move directly impacts my health and well-being as a performer,” she wrote. “I’m personally affected by this and will do everything I can to find resources for myself and the community I’m connected to. I’m sorry, y’all—this is hard, it’s insulting, and it’s downright frustrating.”

Lexi’s post was flooded with support from her followers, but of course, a few trolls just had to show up, clearly clueless about why having HIV info and resources on government websites actually matters.

When one person asked, “Do people even go to the government website for that stuff?” Lexi didn’t hold back and shared her personal experience.

“I relied on a government-funded program for over 10 years—it’s literally the reason I’m still alive today,” she clapped back.

# RuPaul’s Drag Race stars and fans have expressed outrage after Tyra, the winner of the show’s second season, made a “vile” comment regarding the passing of fellow Drag Race icon, The Vivienne.

The Vivienne, whose real name was James Lee Williams, rose to fame as the winner of the first-ever season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019. A representative for the renowned TV and theatre star confirmed on January 5 that the performer tragically passed away over the weekend at the age of 32.

As tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry—featuring heartfelt messages from Michelle Visage, Jinkx Monsoon, and Rylan—former Drag Race contestant Tyra sparked outrage with a deeply offensive comment.

Alistair Keen, Birdland's head keeper, stated that discovering Magnus' true sex presents "another unique hurdle" in their breeding efforts, as it leaves only one female in the colony.

A new female penguin is expected to arrive from Germany in January 2025.

With Magnus being male, it turns out he has been involved in same-sex behavior, which is unusual for penguins.

# Another pair of male penguins in a Dutch zoo were so eager for offspring that they stole an egg from another couple.

The two penguins at DierenPark were found incubating the stolen egg in a nest near a male-female pair, zoo staff reported.

With hatching season underway, the males likely took the egg to raise as their own chicks. The egg was later returned to the parents.

The pair had previously attempted to incubate stones in their enclosure, and fostering is now being considered.
