# Trans Military Ban Reinstated: Supreme Court Greenlights Trump’s Order

On May 6, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a crushing blow to transgender rights by allowing Donald Trump’s executive order banning trans people from serving in the military to take effect. This decision overturns previous lower court rulings that had blocked the policy earlier this year.

Trump’s order, signed in January, brands transgender individuals as “morally unfit” for service and ties their exclusion to so-called “radical gender ideology”—language that has been widely criticised as inflammatory and baseless. No evidence has been presented to support the idea that trans people serving impacts military readiness or effectiveness.

Following the ruling, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed the military to begin discharging transgender personnel—unless they agree to leave voluntarily. This move essentially forces dedicated service members to choose between their careers and their identity.

The reaction from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups was swift and fierce. Organisations like Lambda Legal and the Human Rights Campaign condemned the ruling, calling it a discriminatory and dangerous reversal of progress. They stressed that transgender troops meet the same standards as everyone else and have long proven their ability to serve with honour and professionalism.
