# The new memo from Trump paints trans soldiers as selfish, undisciplined, deceitful, and a threat to the military.

President Trump’s Department of Defense has issued a memo directing military leaders to identify transgender service members within 30 days and discharge them within an additional 30 days, enforcing his anti-trans military ban.

This memo reveals the first steps in putting the ban into practice.

Lesbian federal judge Ana Reyes has allowed the ban to move forward, rejecting attempts to block it despite lawsuits challenging its validity.

The memo also states that any service member diagnosed with or showing symptoms of gender dysphoria will be processed for separation from military service.

The future of trans rights in the military is uncertain as this controversial policy takes effect.

Under Trump’s new memo, trans service members can apply for a waiver to stay in the military, but only if they prove a "compelling government interest" and meet strict criteria, including 36 months of "stability" in their sex without any significant distress.  

The memo mirrors Trump’s previous insults towards trans service members, claiming that gender dysphoria conflicts with military standards like readiness, cohesion, and integrity.  

Judge Ana Reyes, reviewing legal challenges against the ban, condemned the language in Trump’s executive order, calling it “unadulterated animus” against trans individuals.

Trans military advocacy group **SPARTA Pride** pushed back, stating that thousands of qualified trans soldiers are already serving and will continue to defend the country regardless of the ban.  

Two lawsuits have been filed challenging the ban, citing discrimination based on sex and violations of free speech, as military recruiters have been instructed to stop accepting trans recruits.  

A 2016 RAND Corporation study showed that trans-related medical costs are negligible compared to the overall Department of Defense healthcare budget, and foreign militaries have successfully integrated trans soldiers without harming military readiness.
