# Thailand’s Public Health Ministry has allocated millions of baht to provide hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for 200,000 trans people, as part of its growing support for gender-affirming care.

This move further cements Thailand’s reputation as an LGBTQ+-friendly country, with the recent legalization of equal marriage reinforcing its commitment to the trans and non-binary community.

The National Health Security Board has approved a budget of 145.63 million baht (£3 million) in its 2025 planning to support healthcare services for transgender individuals, addressing needs such as hormone therapy.

The funds will assist around 200,000 of the estimated 314,000 trans people in the country, ensuring equal access to medical care, disease prevention, and rehabilitation.

Historically, trans people in Thailand have had to pay out of pocket for gender-affirming care, which sometimes led to risky, unsupervised hormone use.

While the government’s support marks progress, challenges remain, including the lack of legal recognition of gender identity and ongoing barriers in health, education, and employment for the trans community. But it’s 100% a step in the right direction. Well done Thailand!
