**Queer slang can sound like a private group chat escaped into public. One minute somebody is serving; the next, mother has eaten and the room is gagged. Nobody appears to be discussing dinner.**

Before the glossary, an important receipt: much of the language marketed online as 'Gen Z slang' or generic 'gay slang' grew from Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ ballroom communities and from African American English. Drag culture and shows such as RuPaul's Drag Race helped carry many terms into the mainstream, but they did not invent the culture.

Meanings also move. A word may carry a precise ballroom meaning, a broader queer meaning and a watered-down internet meaning at the same time. Use the language with context, give credit and never turn somebody else's culture into a comedy accent.

# Serving

To be serving is to present a look, mood or performance with complete conviction. You can serve face, serve glamour, serve executive realness or serve absolutely nothing. The object tells us what is being delivered.

Example: 'That silver suit is serving intergalactic divorce lawyer.'

# Mother

On the internet, 'mother' often means an iconic woman or performer with authority and devoted fans. In ballroom, a house mother has a deeper role: mentoring, protecting and leading members of a chosen house family, often well beyond the competition floor.

Calling every celebrity mother can be funny, but it should not erase the Black and trans women for whom the title describes real labour, care and leadership.

# Ate (and left no crumbs)

A person who 'ate' did something exceptionally well. If they left no crumbs, the performance was so complete that nothing remained for anybody else. It is praise, not a nutritional update.

Example: 'The verse, the choreography, the tiny sunglasses - she ate.'

# Slay

To slay is to succeed spectacularly, especially in performance, fashion or presence. It can be a verb, an instruction or a full review consisting of one word and several exclamation marks.

# Gagged

Gagged means shocked, overwhelmed or left speechless, usually because something is brilliant, dramatic or unexpected. If you are 'gagged beyond belief', the event has temporarily removed your ability to produce a normal sentence.

# Tea

Tea means information, truth or gossip. To spill the tea is to share it; to clock the tea is to notice what is really going on. 'No tea, no shade' traditionally signals that a blunt observation is coming without claimed malice, although shade may still be very much present.

# Shade

Shade is an indirect insult or a pointed observation that exposes a flaw without spelling out the whole attack. Ballroom icon Dorian Corey famously distinguished shade from a direct read: the implication does the work.

Example: 'I love that you are brave enough to wear that in daylight.' That is shade. The sun has been dragged into it as a witness.

# Read

To read someone is to identify and articulate their flaws directly, often with wit. A good read is specific. Random cruelty is not automatically culture just because somebody snapped afterwards.

# Clocked

To clock something is to notice it, identify it or call it out. The term can be playful, as in 'I clocked that little eye-roll.' Be careful when using it about trans people, because 'clocking' can also mean identifying somebody as trans and may carry real safety implications.

# Kiki

A kiki is an informal get-together for conversation, gossip and laughter. In ballroom, kiki scenes also developed as community spaces and competition circuits, particularly for younger participants. It is more than a cute word for brunch.

# Camp

Camp is an aesthetic that delights in theatricality, exaggeration, artifice and taste so intense it circles back to genius. Camp can be intentional or accidental. A perfect camp object is often sincere about being ridiculous.

# Trade

Historically, trade referred to a conventionally masculine man, often presumed straight or discreet, who had sex with queer men. Online use has broadened and sometimes just means an attractive masculine man. The older sexual and class context still matters.

# Chosen family

Chosen family is not really slang; it is a central queer idea. It describes the people we deliberately build family with, especially when relatives by blood are absent, unsafe or unable to understand us. Ballroom houses are one powerful expression of chosen kinship.

# Baby gay

A baby gay is somebody newly out or newly exploring queer life, regardless of their actual age. The affectionate version welcomes discovery. The patronising version treats a grown adult like a confused child. Context, as always, is mother.

# Queer

Queer is a reclaimed umbrella term for many people whose sexuality or gender sits outside straight, cisgender norms. It also has a history as a slur, and some LGBTQ+ people do not want it used for them. Use it for people and communities who use it for themselves; do not force the reclamation.

## Can straight people use LGBTQ+ slang?

Language travels, and nobody owns every syllable. The respectful approach is to understand the origin, avoid caricature, listen when people from the source community explain a boundary and give credit instead of declaring that TikTok invented ballroom.

## Does queer slang mean the same thing everywhere?

No. Meanings vary by generation, race, location, subculture and platform. If a term is being used in a ballroom space, its meaning may be more specific than the version you heard in a brand advert.
